BIOGEOMON 2026, the 12th edition of the conference series running since 1987, takes place from 8 to 11 June 2026 in Umeå, Sweden. The conference theme is “Ecosystems in Transition,” explored across roughly twenty interdisciplinary sessions reflecting the complexity and dynamism of environmental change in biogeochemistry.
Hosted by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Department of Forest Ecology and Management, BIOGEOMON is an open, interdisciplinary forum for sharing the latest research and exploring future directions in ecosystem biogeochemistry. The series places particular emphasis on integrated observations across the biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere — the “MON” in BIOGEOMON.
A highlight of the 2026 programme is a day of field excursions to leading research infrastructures in the region, including the SITES network — Sweden’s national distributed research infrastructure for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem research — and the Svartberget Research Station, which recently celebrated 100 years of field-based research and is home to the internationally renowned Krycklan Catchment Study.
The local committee is chaired by Prof. Hjalmar Laudon (SLU), with co-chairs including Prof. Kevin Bishop (SLU), Dr Blaize Denfeld (SITES), and Dr Tejshree Tiwari (SLU).
For GERI partners, BIOGEOMON sits at the intersection of long-term ecosystem observation and biogeochemical research that several GERI partner sites contribute to directly. Several eLTER and ICOS sites in northern Europe maintain biogeochemical observations relevant to the conference’s session themes.
The full programme, session list, and venue details are available on the BIOGEOMON 2026 site.
